Chinese Medicine…Did You Know?

At Healing Hands Animal Hospital, we treat the animal, not the disease.  That’s the motto of our founder, Dr. Carol Ross Lewis, whose approach to animal health involves combining the best practices of conventional Western veterinary medicine with age-old modalities of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), including acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Tui-Na and food therapy, to promote health and a long life for your pet.  For example:

·         Acupuncture concerns the flow of energy, or Qi (pronounced “chee”), through the body along defined pathways called meridians.  Practiced in China for 4,000 years, acupuncture balances Qi to enable the body to fight disease or injury. Acupuncture can address a wide range of ailments from joint disease to allergies, skin conditions, seizures and immune diseases, to name just a few.

·         Tui-Na is a form of medical massage that combines techniques of acupressure, soft tissue manipulation and range of motion techniques to realign the musculoskeletal system, addressing joint injuries and nerve pain.

·         Chinese herbal medicine has been used for centuries to treat almost any condition that might be treated with modern Western pharmaceuticals.  Made up largely of combinations of plants and minerals, these herbal formulas are created to elicit specific therapeutic actions.  Healing Hands prescribes Chinese herbs to treat arthritis, pain, heart conditions, kidney problems, digestive issues, and to counter the effects of radiation or chemotherapy.

·         Food Therapy.  The Chinese learned centuries ago how important a healthy digestive system is for the prevention of disease. Borrowing from this long tradition, food therapy involves using food as medicine to put the body in balance and fight skin conditions, digestive issues and respiratory problems.
