As you may already know, February is Pet Dental Health Month. Most people understand the importance of maintaining dental health, no matter whether we're talking about humans or four‐footed animals. There is overwhelming evidence that bacteria from plaque and tartar travel through the bloodstream to lodge in the heart valves, causing heart disease. We also know how very painful dental disease can be. Pets simply don't have as many ways to express pain as we do.

The dental cleaning starts with “charting” your pet’s mouth; identifying which teeth are missing and any abnormalities such as gingivitis or tumors. Larger formations of tartar are removed using veterinary dental tools. A water cooled ultrasonic scaler cleans the remaining tartar and debris from the tooth surfaces. Then the gums depths around the teeth are measured and recorded. Your pet’s teeth are then polished with a veterinary toothpaste using a slow speed polisher, and then rinsed with water.

Finally, we dry your pet’s teeth and apply Oravet, a waxy sealant that prevents plaque and tartar formation. A nurse will stay with your pet as he/she wakes up to monitor for any complications. In addition to the dental cleaning, your pet will have their nails trimmed and filed, their ears cleaned, and their anal glands expressed before they go home that afternoon.

To honor dental health month, we are offering 10% off dental cleanings* in the month of February. In preparation for your pets dental cleaning, please call our office to schedule a physical exam and pre-anesthesic bloodwork (required 30 days prior to dental cleanings).  All dental patients must be current on rabies, distemper, bordetella, heartworm/lyme/ehrlichia/anaplasma test (canines only), and a stool check for parasites. Schedule your pre-dental exam in January so we can reserve a spot in February for your pet's discounted dental cleaning!

*10% discount is off dental cleaning only. Discount does not apply to tooth extractions, oral surgeries, pain medications, antibiotics, etc...The dental discount can be used in conjunction with your Military, Senior Citizen, or Chamber of Commerce discount.
